About This Exhibition
Muranga Gorges: An Outdoor Expose
A miniature template of the place that broke itself, more popular as the Marafa Depression in Kilifi County in the coast region of Kenya, Muranga Gorges are equally as fascinating as they are spectral. On the scale of size and origin they are opposite-number to Olduka Valley situated north of Mogotio in Baringo County, being certainly larger than the deep carved ravines of Melwa Gorge in Elgeyo Marakwet County. All are absolutely magnificent and wonderful in their vastness.
What is common among all these fascinating and photogenic sites is that they are the result of river action. In Muranga County, at the not so widely-known Muranga gorges, the river has cut a deep, narrow valley with steep, rocky walls, carving, by the erosive action, over long periods of time, narrow ridges with lofty earth pillars. The result is a dramatic geological formation, showcasing the power of natural forces of water typifies by vertical cliffs, ribbed spires, and a colourful landscape.
Visiting Muranga Gorges, your imagination is bound to run wild as you conjure up the ancient process of the riverβs flow, carrying sediments that scraped against the riverbed, plodding, cutting extremely slow downwards. The timescale and slow process is often hard to comprehend, of the utter resilience to cut the sides of the gorge that were eventually eroded with the additional hand of the weathering and additional tributaries. The latter was responsible for expanding the narrow gorge.
The intrepid at Muranga County will be quick to realize that the yellow to brown soil is soft, sandy even, allowing the river to carve steep walls rather than wide valleys. There are unmarked foot trails along the rims and down into the gorge, offering stunning views of this unusual attraction. Muranga Gorges is a prime location for exploration, before embarking on whitewater rafting and kayaking.
Despite being underdeveloped and unmarketed, the striking natural formation of Muranga Gorges highlights the power of erosion and the beauty of untouched landscapes. With due process taken to improve safety and put up amenities, it could become a hub for adventure tourism, scientific study, and environmental conservation thanks to its unique ecological outlook. The site of Muranga Gorges is located about 4 km south of Sagana town off the C71 Sagana-Muranga Roa
